12 Tips For Your First Bikini Wax!

With summer fast approaching, it's time to tidy up downstairs and get ready for the beach! Waxing is a great alternative to shaving as it lasts 2-4 weeks instead of a couple of days. So, if you are thinking about getting your first Bikini or Brazilian wax, check out the below tips you need to know before your appointment:

1. DO NOT shave before your appointment!

A big mistake made by many women is shaving before their waxing appointment. This is a big no! no! as the hair must be at least 0.5cm long. If the hair is too short, the wax will not pick them up.

2. Choose your style & shape

- Bikini Wax: Only takes the hair off the sides of your bikini line.

- Brazilian Wax: Removes all the hair from front to back.

- Full-Bush Brazilian: Removes all hair except keeping a triangle or landing strip in the front.

3. The time of the month matters!

If you can, avoid scheduling your appointment within 3 days of your period as your skin tends to be more sensitive during that time.

4. Have a shower that day

While this seems quite obvious, it is worth a reminder. Your beauty therapist will thank you and you will feel less self conscious. If possible, try showering right before your appointment as this will open the pores, making the actual experience less painful.

5. Feeling a bit exposed...

When you enter the treatment room you will be asked to remove your pants and underwear, before laying down on the table covering yourself with a towel. You can wear a disposable G-string for a bikini wax but if you are wanting a Brazilian type wax, you may have to be naked from the waist down.

It is always important to remember your beauty therapist has done this type of wax countless times, and will make sure you feel comfortable so you don't have to worry about exposing yourself.

6. No pain, no gain!

Unless your have the thinnest hair on earth or no pain receptors, you can expect to feel pain during your wax. Some clients opt for a topical numbing cream which can be applied at least an hour before your appointment, while other simply take paracetamol or ibuprofen before to dull the pain.

7. Pain level will vary

While it is definitely more relaxing to get a facial than bikini or Brazilian wax, the level of pain experienced will differ from person to person. Body hair that is thicker and coarser, can be more stubborn to remove so more pain and redness may be experienced.

8. Things are about to get personal...

If you are wanting to book a Brazilian wax, be prepared for your beauty therapist to get up close and personal. You may also have to assist or move into some awkward positions to allow for all the hair to be removed.

9. No hair left behind!

It is normal for there to be stray hairs after your wax but don't worry, your beauty therapist will be sure to tweeze them out! Some beauty therapists may ask if you want them plucked, while others may get rid of them without letting you know beforehand.

10. There will be redness

You may experience redness and irritation after your wax. To help, try wearing loose fitting clothing to your appointment and avoid any activities that may cause friction or rubbing after. This can cause further irritation and nasty, ingrown hairs! The good news; any redness should go away overnight.

11. Soothe your skin

Aloe Vera gel is great for soothing the skin after waxing. It helps to reduce redness, calm inflammation and irritation. Your beauty therapist will apply Aloe Vera gel or another alternative after your wax is completed as well.

12. Don't hit the beach just yet!

It is best to let your skin breathe after your appointment so it is recommended to avoid the beach straight after your wax. I know you're feeling beach ready, but if you wait just an extra day, you can distract yourself by buying a new swimsuit for your new wax!
